Junior Copper Miners: Structural Damage Deepens as Participation Remains Weak
The correction is spreading through junior copper equities. A few sharp individual rebounds have not translated into broad market recovery, while long-term breadth and volume balance continue to deteriorate.
Data through October 9, 2026 · Weekly comparison October 2–9 · 186 securities analyzed
Weekly performance: weakness outweighs isolated rebounds
Only 55 of 186 securities (29.6%) advanced over the week, while 111 (59.7%) declined. The median weekly return was −1.84%. Declines of at least 5% occurred in 61 names, compared with 33 advances of at least 5%. The distribution is therefore still tilted toward weakness despite several exceptional gainers.
Decade Resources (DEC.V) and Altiplano Metals (APN.V) each rose approximately 50% for the week; General Strategic Metals (GSMI.CD) and Grid Metals (GRDM.V) gained approximately 33%. These individual moves are not evidence of a sector-wide reversal.
Long-term breadth has broken down
The share trading above its 200-session average has fallen from 52.7% four weeks ago to 37.7% today. On the same 182-security sample, the decline is 14.8 percentage points. Fewer than four in ten securities remain above this widely used trend threshold, illustrating how quickly the correction has broadened.
Drawdown breadth: damage is still expanding
| Distance below 52-week closing high | October 9 | October 2 |
|---|---|---|
| More than 10% | 90.7% | 89.6% |
| More than 20% | 80.3% | 79.2% |
| More than 30% | 65.0% | 63.4% |
| More than 40% | 45.9% | 43.7% |
| More than 50% | 30.1% | 29.5% |
| Median drawdown | −38.5% | −36.1% |
The median security is now 38.5% below its highest close of the past 52 weeks, compared with 36.1% one week earlier. Over each security's available data history, the median drawdown is much deeper, at −83.7%. This longer-history figure is relative to the highest close in the supplied dataset, not necessarily an all-time high.
Volume: no broad confirmation of buying interest
Median relative volume rose modestly from 0.72× to 0.77×, but remains below normal. Only 19 of 183 securities (10.4%) registered relative volume of at least 1.5×, down from 24 a week earlier. Among securities rising over five sessions, just 8 of 183 (4.4%) combined positive returns with elevated volume. The median 20-session signed volume balance deteriorated from −8.1% to −12.2%; only 34.8% of valid names recorded a positive balance.
Low relative volume does not establish that selling pressure has ended. It indicates muted participation; a durable reversal would ideally bring broader price improvement together with stronger activity.
What would change the picture?
A more convincing recovery would require a sustained rebound in the percentage of securities above MA200, stabilization of the drawdown distribution and an expansion of positive, high-volume participation. Individual weekly winners can emerge well before these conditions are met. For now, the data support caution rather than a confirmed structural turn.

Methodology and limitations
Equal-weighted analysis of the 186 securities included in the supplied Junior Copper universe, as of October 9, 2026. MA200 and 52-week drawdown breadth use valid subsets (typically 183 securities); four-week MA200 comparisons use 182 securities with observations on both dates. Drawdowns are calculated from closing prices, not intraday highs. Relative volume compares the most recent five sessions with the preceding 60 sessions. Signed volume balance classifies session volume by the direction of closing-price changes; it does not measure actual buyer-versus-seller order flow. The universe is the current analyzed set, not reconstructed historical membership. Data quality, stale quotations and corporate actions may affect comparisons.
