STOXX 600: Breadth Improves, but the Recovery Remains Fragile

A more balanced week and improving volume breadth provide relief, but long-term participation remains below its level four weeks ago and nearly two thirds of the tracked securities are more than 10% below their 52-week closing highs.

Stabilization, not yet broad-based strength

The 610-security scanner universe finished the October 2–9 period almost unchanged at the typical-stock level: median weekly return 0.00%, versus −1.55% the preceding week. The number of advancing stocks rose to 304 of 610, from a market dominated by declines the previous week. However, this week's stabilization has not yet repaired the damage to longer-term participation.

1. The selling pressure has moderated

The average weekly return was just +0.04% and the median was flat. 304 securities advanced, 301 declined and 5 were unchanged. This is a marked improvement from the prior week's median decline of 1.55% and its 72.1% share of declining stocks. It indicates stabilization across the scanner universe rather than a decisive rebound.

2. Trend participation has improved since last week—but weakened over four weeks

318 of 609 eligible securities (52.2%) trade above their 200-day moving average, compared with 304 of 609 (49.9%) at the previous snapshot. On a 607-security common sample, however, MA200 breadth fell from 55.7% four weeks earlier to 52.1%, a deterioration of 3.6 percentage points. The short-term gain does not yet overturn that wider trend.

3. A large part of the market is still in drawdown

Among 608 securities with valid 52-week data, 388 (63.8%) are more than 10% below their own highest closing price of the period. Another 207 (34.0%) sit more than 20% below their 52-week closing high; 88 (14.5%) are down more than 30%. The median 52-week drawdown is −13.9%, nearly unchanged week on week. The breadth of 10%-plus drawdowns actually rose from 61.3% a week earlier, despite the steadier weekly returns.

4. Volume-balance breadth is recovering from weak levels

The median signed 20-session volume balance improved from −17.59% to −10.38%. The percentage of securities with a positive balance rose from 24.1% to 34.6% (211 of 610). That improvement is meaningful, but most readings remain negative.

Median five-session relative volume fell from 1.03× to 0.96×. Only 39 of 610 securities (6.4%) traded at 1.5× or more of their reference volume, down from 62 the preceding week. High-volume selling decliners fell from 47 to 20; high-volume gainers rose from 15 to 19. Pressure is easing, but widespread high-conviction buying is not yet visible.

5. Leadership is selective

The largest weekly movers included Bridgepoint Group (+21.2%), ALK-Abelló (+12.8%), Amplifon (+11.3%) and Frontline (+11.0%). These are company-specific examples from the scanner's weekly ranking, not evidence of a uniform advance across any one sector. The complete 610-security ranking below makes the dispersion visible.

6. What would improve the structural picture?

A more persuasive turn would require sustained growth in the proportion of securities above MA200, a decline in the share sitting far below 52-week closing highs, and broader participation in positive volume balances. The current week provides early relief, but the historical and trend measures do not yet confirm a durable recovery.

Bottom line: the STOXX 600 scanner has moved from broad weekly selling to near-balanced participation. Nonetheless, longer-term breadth remains damaged, substantial drawdowns persist and buying volume has not become pervasive. Stabilization is visible; structural confirmation is still missing.

Methodology and limitations

All metrics are derived from the Structural Alpha Weekly Analysis STOXX600 scanner workbook and its two supplied histories, with the latest snapshot dated October 9, 2026. The weekly summary archive spans 49 observations from November 2025 to October 2026. Some measurements have fewer than 610 eligible observations, as indicated by their denominators. The 52-week drawdown uses the highest observed closing price over 52 weeks rather than an intraday high.

Benchmark caution: the source scanner identifies its comparison benchmark as S&P 500, even though the universe is labeled STOXX600. Consequently, benchmark-relative figures are excluded from the interpretation: they should not be mistaken for performance relative to a European STOXX 600 index. The sample has 610 scanner securities rather than precisely 600 constituents, and should not be treated as an independently verified point-in-time index membership list.
