S&P 500 Market Breadth Improves, but Internal Divergences Persist

500 U.S. large-cap stocks analyzed through October 16, 2026: market breadth, volume, drawdowns and complete rankings.

Executive summary. The 500-stock S&P 500 universe recorded a broad weekly recovery through October 16. Participation improved, but nearly half the companies remain below their 200-day moving averages and substantial drawdowns persist. Weekly momentum should not be confused with sustained structural leadership.

1. Weekly performance: a broad but uneven advance

358 of 500 companies advanced (71.6%), while 142 declined. The median weekly return was +2.68%, compared with an average of +1.14%. This gap reflects an asymmetric return distribution in which pronounced losses in some companies weighed on the average. 126 securities gained at least 5%, while 64 fell by at least 5%. The advance was widespread, but far from uniform.

2. Market breadth: a modest long-term improvement

258 of 499 companies with valid data (51.70%) closed above their 200-day moving average, compared with 244 (48.90%) four weeks earlier on the same 499-stock sample. The improvement of 2.81 percentage points puts a narrow majority above this long-term reference, but leaves nearly half the universe below it.

October 16 — 51.70%

3. Drawdowns: improvement without full repair

The median drawdown from the highest closing price in the last 52 weeks improved from −15.38% to −14.62%. Nevertheless, 178 of 497 comparable stocks (35.81%) remain more than 20% below their 52-week closing highs, and 85 (17.10%) remain more than 30% below. Across each security's available historical series, the median drawdown is −24.99%; these historical lookback periods are not necessarily identical.

4. Volume: better directional balance, limited intensity

The median 20-session signed volume balance shifted from −8.97% to +1.68%, while the share of stocks with a positive balance rose from 34.27% to 55.31%. This indicates a notable improvement in the distribution of trading activity across advancing and declining sessions. However, median five-session relative volume remained at only 0.97× its preceding 60-session baseline. Just 23 of 499 securities recorded relative volume of at least 1.5×. Directional volume is not a direct measure of institutional accumulation or net buying.

5. Weekly winners are not necessarily structural leaders

Fair Isaac (FICO) led the weekly ranking with +15.52%, yet ranked 477th globally and remained down more than 50% year to date. ConocoPhillips (COP), by contrast, ranked 12th weekly (+9.25%) and fourth globally, with a year-to-date gain of +51.51%. These contrasting cases show why a sharp weekly rebound is not equivalent to persistent leadership.

6. Interpretation and scenarios

Measured observations. Most companies advanced, the share above MA200 rose modestly, and signed volume balance improved. Deep drawdowns nevertheless remain widespread.

Interpretation. Internal conditions have improved, but the evidence does not yet establish a decisive, durable broad-market uptrend.

Scenarios. A stronger constructive reading would require sustained expansion in MA200 breadth, fewer deep drawdowns and broader participation in volume. Renewed breadth deterioration would weaken the case for a lasting recovery. Neither outcome is confirmed by the present dataset.

7. Methodology and limitations

This is an equally weighted analysis of the supplied current 500-security universe, not a reconstruction of historical S&P 500 membership or a capitalization-weighted index portfolio. MA200 breadth uses 499 valid observations; 52-week drawdown breadth uses 497. Drawdowns compare current closes with historical closing-price highs, not intraday highs. Relative volume compares the most recent five sessions with the preceding 60, while directional balance covers 20 sessions. Missing data, corporate actions and differing historical coverage can affect comparisons. Rankings are descriptive, not personalized investment recommendations.
