Energy Stocks: Oil Producers Lead as Market Breadth Becomes More Selective

Market breadth, drawdowns, volume dynamics and leadership across 169 energy instruments. Data through October 16, 2026.

−10.80%Median 52-week drawdown
−3.29%20-session volume balance

Executive summary. Of 169 energy instruments, 106 advanced during the week ending October 16, 2026. Oil and gas producers led the advance, while refiners retained high global ranks. Market breadth remains relatively constructive, although it has narrowed over the past four weeks.

1. Weekly gains mask substantial dispersion

Of 169 instruments, 106 advanced and 63 declined in the week through October 16, 2026. The median return was +2.05%. Forty-eight gained at least 5%, while 29 lost 5% or more. Only four rose more than 10%, compared with twelve that lost at least 10%. The positive majority coexisted with substantial differences across energy businesses.

2. Market breadth remains constructive but has narrowed

Some 110 instruments (65.09%) closed above MA200, versus 119 (70.41%) four weeks earlier: a decline of 5.33 percentage points. Median distance above MA200 was approximately 7%. Participation has weakened, but a majority of the universe retains a favorable long-term trend position.

3. Drawdowns: improving center, weak tail

The median 52-week drawdown improved from −11.23% to −10.80%. However, 48 instruments remained more than 20% below their 52-week closing highs, 26 more than 30%, 19 more than 40%, and 14 more than 50%. Relative to the highest available historical closes, median drawdown was −38.11%; 64 instruments were more than 50% below their available-history highs.

4. Volume: selling pressure moderates

Median 20-session directional volume balance improved from −9.92% to −3.29%; the share with a positive balance increased from 34.3% to 45.6%. Instruments with relative volume of at least 1.5 times increased from eight to twenty. Yet eleven of those twenty declined over the latest five sessions. Higher volume alone does not establish broad accumulation.

5. Weekly leaders: oil and gas producers

Granite Ridge Resources (GRNT, +14.26%), Vermilion Energy (VET, +11.20%), Baytex Energy (BTE, +10.40%), Vermilion's Toronto listing (VET.TO, +10.29%) and Strathcona Resources (SCR.TO, +9.79%) led the week. ConocoPhillips, Ovintiv, Canadian Natural Resources, Chevron and Exxon Mobil also advanced. Multiple listings mean 169 instruments do not necessarily represent 169 distinct issuers.

6. Global ranking: refiners retain leadership

Marathon Petroleum (MPC), CVR Energy (CVI), Baytex Energy's Toronto listing (BTE.TO), HF Sinclair (DINO) and APA Corporation (APA) occupy the top five global ranks. Refiners hold several leading positions despite not always topping weekly performance. Marathon Petroleum ranked 48th weekly but first globally. Rankings are model classifications, not investment recommendations.

7. Laggards: another side of Energy

Centrus Energy (LEU, −19.31%), Solaris Energy Infrastructure (SEI, −17.88%), Plug Power (PLUG, −17.86%), National Energy Services Reunited (NESR, −17.78%) and ProPetro (PUMP, −14.96%) were among the weakest. Selected solar companies and oilfield service providers also struggled. Different energy businesses respond to different catalysts.

8. Relative performance versus benchmark

The benchmark used by Weekly Analysis fell 1.95% over the week. Some 123 instruments (72.8%) outperformed it, with median weekly excess performance of +4.00 percentage points. Over four weeks, only 49.7% outperformed. Relative strength was more widespread over one week than over the longer comparison.

9. Interpretation and scenarios

Energy retains a majority above MA200, but breadth has narrowed and leadership is increasingly selective. A stronger recovery would require sustained improvement in MA200 participation, broader positive volume balances and fewer deep drawdowns. Further breadth deterioration would weaken the constructive interpretation. These are conditional scenarios, not forecasts.

Methodology and limitations

Weekly Analysis tracks 169 energy-related instruments through October 16, 2026, including ETFs and multiple exchange listings. Cross-sectional measures weight instruments equally, not by capitalization. Drawdowns use closing highs; available historical records differ. Directional volume is a price-direction proxy, not a direct institutional-flow measure. Proprietary ranking calculations are not disclosed.
