Executive summary. Market weakness broadened, while directional volume deteriorated to its third-most negative observation in the available 151-week sample. The evidence points to substantial selling pressure, not a confirmed bottom.
1. Weekly market performance
The correction in Australian-listed mining shares intensified in the week ending 16 October. The median stock fell 3.26%, while the equally weighted mean return was −4.23%. The 25 best weekly performers gained 2.32% on average, compared with an average decline of 11.76% among the 25 weakest. This asymmetry highlights how losses at the bottom of the distribution outweighed isolated pockets of resilience.
2. Market breadth: only one in three above MA200
Just 29 of the 90 companies (32.22%) remain above their 200-day moving average. Four weeks earlier, breadth was 50.56%. On the matched 89-company sample, the four-week change was −17.98 percentage points. The median distance from MA200 is −10.06%, showing that weakness extends well beyond a handful of laggards. This is measured deterioration, not proof that the long-term cycle has ended.
3. Volume: the week's most important development
Median relative volume rose from 0.73× to 0.91×, while the number of companies trading at least 1.5 times their reference volume climbed from one to ten. Eight of those ten were declining over five sessions and only one was advancing. The median 20-session directional volume balance dropped from −5.14% to −23.60%; only 15 companies now show a positive balance, compared with 37 the previous week. Activity remains below normal at the median, but the exceptional participation is concentrated predominantly in falling stocks. Directional volume does not identify actual buyer or seller identities.
4. Drawdowns: damage extends across the universe
The median 52-week closing-high drawdown deepened from −33.62% to −35.47%. Among 89 companies with valid observations, 78.65% trade more than 20% below their 52-week highs, 58.43% more than 30% below, and 28.09% more than 50% below. The median decline from the highest close in each company's available history reaches −65.24%; 55 of 90 companies are more than 50% below that historical reference. These horizons measure different things and should not be conflated.
5. Historical context: 151 weekly observations
Across 151 weekly observations extending back to December 2023, the current MA200 breadth reading is the 15th-lowest (including ties), while the median 20-session volume balance is the third-most negative. The median 52-week drawdown is the 18th-most negative and the median weekly return the 31st-lowest. The worst volume-balance observation was −27.31% on 27 March 2026. The current −23.60% is close to that extreme. Because rolling observations overlap, these are descriptive rankings, not independent statistical events or validated bottom signals.
6. Where relative strength remains
Vertex Minerals (+10.00%), DPM Metals CDI (+9.69%), Brightstar Resources (+9.09%), Horizon Gold (+8.82%), and Forrestania Resources (+7.81%) led weekly performance. However, a strong week is not synonymous with durable leadership: Vertex remains roughly 28.7% below its MA200 and down around 55.1% year to date. At the other end, Polymetals Resources (−26.58%), Solstice Minerals (−19.41%), and Broken Hill Mines (−18.94%) recorded the sharpest declines. The full table below provides both weekly and global ranks.
7. Relative performance against the S&P 500
The S&P 500 declined 0.86% during the week, compared with a −3.26% median ASX stock return. Only 19 of 90 ASX companies outperformed the benchmark over one week, and just eight over four weeks; 50 outperformed over three months, but only 19 year to date. These are cross-market reference comparisons, not currency-adjusted or sector-matched benchmarks.
8. Interpretation and scenarios
Three developments coincide: sharply reduced long-term breadth, widespread drawdowns, and a historically weak directional volume balance. A more convincing stabilization would combine improving MA200 participation, a less negative volume balance, and fewer companies extending their drawdowns. Continued high-volume weakness would instead leave room for further deterioration. Neither scenario is a forecast. Extreme readings describe the present market state and do not establish a reliable timing signal.
9. Methodology and limitations
This is an equally weighted analysis of a fixed 90-security ASX mining universe. MA200 breadth counts stocks above their 200-session simple moving average. Relative volume compares recent five-session trading with a non-overlapping 60-session reference. Directional volume balance summarizes volume on advancing and declining sessions across a 20-session window; it is not net institutional flow. Drawdowns use closing-price highs. Denominators vary with valid data, and historical observations reflect the currently tracked universe rather than a fully reconstructed historical membership. Rankings are research tools, not personalized investment advice.
