Executive summary

Junior mining stocks are undergoing one of the most intense phases of technical deterioration in the period under review. Yet the historical study of 452 companies reveals a paradox: despite the magnitude of the correction, almost three out of every four companies retain gains since February 2024.

Some 73.9% of companies have a positive cumulative return, and the median gain reaches 127.27%. At the same time, the median current drawdown stands at 51.31%, meaning that the company at the center of the distribution has lost approximately half its value from its own high during the period.

Market-breadth analysis confirms the depth of the deterioration. On October 23, just 17.56% of companies with sufficient data traded above their 200-session moving average, while only 6.83% stood above their 50-session moving average.

On October 26, some initial signs of stabilization appeared: the percentage of companies making new lows declined, and participation above both moving averages improved slightly. Nevertheless, a single recovery session does not constitute a confirmed bullish divergence.

The conclusion is clear: the bull market that developed since February 2024 generated extraordinary gains, but the current correction has produced exceptionally widespread technical deterioration. Determining whether this is a recovery opportunity or the beginning of a more prolonged bear phase requires monitoring the evolution of breadth over the coming weeks.

1. Methodology and study universe

The study covers 452 junior mining companies, using February 29, 2024 as its initial reference date and October 26, 2026 as its final reference date.

Two complementary sources were used:

Reconciling the identifiers made it possible to locate the corresponding price series for all 452 companies. The initial differences were mainly due to ticker-naming conventions between the ranking and the historical files.

The subsequent audit confirmed agreement in cumulative returns, maximum drawdowns, current drawdowns and observation counts for all 452 companies, with no discrepancies greater than 0.05 percentage points.

The prices already incorporate the relevant adjustments for stock splits and corporate actions. No additional adjustments were applied.

Historical breadth indicators use only the reconciled universe of 452 companies. For each session, the denominator includes only securities with available quotations and sufficient history to calculate the relevant indicator.

This distinction matters: the reference universe remains defined, but the number of valid observations may vary from one date to another.

Moving averages are calculated from 50 and 200 closing prices. Short- and long-term new lows are determined using windows of 20 and 252 sessions, respectively, based on closing prices.

2. The cycle's balance sheet: extraordinary gains since February 2024

The study's first conclusion is that junior miners' cumulative performance has been far more favorable than the intensity of the recent correction might suggest.

Of the 452 companies analyzed:

PerformanceCompaniesPercentage
Positive return33473.9%
Negative return11224.8%
Essentially unchanged61.3%
Total452100%

The median cumulative return is 127.27%.

This means that the company at the center of the distribution has multiplied its initial price by approximately 2.27.

The distribution is also highly dispersed. Among the 436 companies initially matched directly, 237 had at least doubled in value, 165 had accumulated gains of more than 200%, and 62 had gained more than 500%.

These figures refer to that 436-company subsample and must not be confused with counts for the full universe.

The result demonstrates that, despite recent deterioration, the cycle beginning in February 2024 has generated substantial appreciation for a large majority of the companies studied.

However, cumulative gains do not adequately describe the risk investors have borne or the current technical situation.

To understand those dimensions, it is essential to examine declines from highs.

3. The other side of the bull market: devastating drawdowns

Drawdown measures the percentage decline from a previous high.

In markets characterized by high volatility, such as junior mining stocks, this indicator is particularly relevant because it quantifies how much value has been lost during corrections, even when cumulative returns remain positive.

The study's results are unequivocal:

IndicatorResult
Median maximum drawdown−61.49%
Median current drawdown−51.31%
Companies with current drawdown of at least 30%367
Companies with current drawdown of at least 40%311
Companies with current drawdown of at least 50%240
Companies with current drawdown of at least 60%160

More than half of the companies trade at least 50% below their individual highs during the period.

The median maximum drawdown reaches 61.49%, reflecting the extraordinary severity of the corrections experienced since February 2024.

The two measures must be distinguished. Maximum drawdown represents the worst decline observed during the period, whereas current drawdown measures the distance between the latest close and the preceding high.

The contrast between a median cumulative return of 127.27% and a median current drawdown of 51.31% is one of this research's central findings.

A market can retain extraordinary long-term gains while simultaneously being immersed in an extremely severe correction.

These two circumstances are not mutually exclusive.

It is also important to remember that these medians are calculated individually: they do not represent the return or drawdown of an equally weighted portfolio.

4. Market breadth: deterioration spreads across almost the entire universe

Breadth allows us to assess how many companies are genuinely participating in a trend.

Whereas indices may be influenced by a small number of larger-capitalization companies, breadth indicators offer a wider view of the market's internal health.

For junior miners, this distinction is especially important given the enormous heterogeneity of the universe.

Moving-average analysis reveals a very sharp deterioration during September and October 2026.

4.1. Participation above the 200-session moving average

16 Oct 202626.16%
23 Oct 202617.56%
26 Oct 202617.75%

In less than two months, participation above the 200-session moving average fell from 50.23% to 17.56%.

The decline exceeds 32 percentage points.

This means that a very large part of the universe moved from relatively favorable technical structures to trading below its long-term trend reference.

October 23 recorded the lowest participation level above this average within the weekly reconstruction analyzed.

The recovery to 17.75% on October 26 was still marginal.

4.2. Participation above the 50-session moving average

The deterioration is even more pronounced when we examine the intermediate trend.

9 Oct 202623.92%
16 Oct 202614.43%
23 Oct 20266.83%
26 Oct 20267.67%

At the end of August, more than three-quarters of companies traded above their 50-session moving average.

On October 23, fewer than seven out of every hundred still met that condition.

This represents an extraordinarily rapid deterioration in participation.

The 50-session average responds more quickly to trend changes than the 200-session average. Its collapse therefore reflects the intensity of recent selling pressure.

The fact that both measures reached such low levels indicates that weakness is not confined to the short term: it simultaneously affects intermediate- and long-term trend structures.

5. New lows: selling pressure reaches extreme levels

New lows are another essential tool for assessing breadth.

When the percentage of companies breaking below their previous lows rises, bearish pressure is spreading to a growing share of the market.

Conversely, a persistent reduction in new lows while indices continue to decline may foreshadow a bullish divergence.

5.1. Evolution of new lows

Date20-session new lows52-week new lows

2 Oct 202619.66%1.70%
9 Oct 20265.98%0.96%

23 Oct 202640.00%9.51%
26 Oct 202626.38%6.95%

On October 23, 40% of companies with valid data recorded new 20-session closing lows.

At the same time, 9.51% registered new 52-week lows.

The latter was the highest percentage in the weekly reconstruction since February 2024.

This is especially significant because 52-week lows do not merely reflect a short-term correction. They indicate that part of the universe is breaking price levels that had not been breached for approximately one trading year.

The combination of long-term new lows and extremely low moving-average participation provides strong evidence of widespread technical deterioration.

6. October 2026 compared with other selling waves

To assess how exceptional the current episode is, it is useful to compare it with other weeks of intense bearish pressure.

Week20-session new lows52-week new lows
4 Apr 202547.67%10.00%
13 Mar 202645.21%1.06%

5 Jun 202656.22%5.26%
23 Oct 202640.00%9.51%
26 Oct 202626.38%6.95%

Methodological note: the first four rows come from the preliminary exploration of the broader historical universe; the last two refer to the definitive 452-company universe. This table is therefore an indicative reference, not a definitive like-for-like comparison.

The distinction between 20-session and 52-week lows is fundamental.

March 2026 saw particularly intense short-term selling waves. However, the proportion of companies breaking 52-week lows was much smaller.

In October 2026, by contrast, bearish pressure coincides with deeper deterioration across numerous individual structures.

This suggests that the current episode cannot be interpreted solely as a sharp, temporary liquidation.

There is also a significant loss of strength over longer time horizons.

7. Has a bullish divergence begun to form?

The most important question for investors is not merely how far companies have fallen, but whether signs of selling-pressure exhaustion are beginning to emerge.

Bullish breadth divergences typically develop when the market continues to register new price lows, but progressively fewer companies participate in that move.

In other words, indices may continue falling while the market's internal structure improves.

This behavior can precede a recovery, although it does not guarantee that one will occur immediately.

The first signals on October 26

Four favorable changes occurred between October 23 and October 26:

Indicator23 Oct26 Oct
Companies above MA20017.56%17.75%
Companies above MA506.83%7.67%
20-session new lows40.00%26.38%
52-week new lows9.51%6.95%

The decline in 20-session new lows is particularly notable: a drop of 13.62 percentage points in a single session.

New 52-week lows also moderated, and participation above both moving averages improved slightly.

These movements constitute an initial sign of stabilization.

Nevertheless, they do not yet allow us to claim that a confirmed bullish divergence has formed.

That would require a more prolonged sequence in which fewer companies make new lows, participation above moving averages improves, and the market demonstrates an ability to sustain that recovery.

A single favorable session after an extraordinarily intense decline may simply represent a technical rebound.

Confirmation requires continuity.

8. Relative strength: not all junior miners behave alike

The study reveals extraordinary dispersion among companies.

Some have multiplied their share prices since February 2024, while others have lost practically all their value over the same period.

This heterogeneity makes relative strength an essential tool.

The largest cumulative gains

CompanyCumulative returnCurrent drawdown
San Lorenzo Gold+7,633.3%−24.2%
Adyton Resources+3,550.0%−33.6%
Benz Mining+2,393.8%−26.2%
Patagonia Gold+2,166.7%−74.4%
Belo Sun Mining+2,050.0%−47.6%
Montage Gold+1,785.0%−28.6%
Golconda Gold+1,612.5%−33.2%
Discovery Silver+1,555.7%−24.2%
Highlander Silver+1,484.5%−39.0%

The table highlights two different dimensions of leadership.

The first is the ability to generate cumulative gains over the cycle.

The second is the ability to preserve those gains during a correction.

Patagonia Gold, for example, retains an extraordinary cumulative gain, but its current drawdown exceeds 74%.

Discovery Silver, by contrast, combines a very high cumulative return with a considerably smaller correction.

This demonstrates that a company may rank among the great historical winners while nevertheless showing far greater recent deterioration than other companies in the same group.

Relative strength should be assessed through both cumulative performance and resilience during corrective phases.

Leadership may also change during market transitions. Companies that led one bull-market phase will not necessarily lead the next.

For that reason, relative-strength rankings should be updated regularly and analyzed alongside the evolution of breadth.

9. A correction within a bull market, or the beginning of a bear market?

The results raise a question that cannot be answered definitively based solely on the magnitude of the declines.

On the one hand, most companies retain cumulative gains since February 2024.

The median return exceeds 127%, reflecting the breadth of the appreciation recorded during the cycle.

On the other hand, the depth of drawdowns and the deterioration in moving averages show that the market is undergoing a phase of exceptional technical weakness.

Both circumstances must be considered simultaneously.

Recovery scenario

The favorable interpretation would be that the current correction represents a phase of extreme liquidation within a longer-term uptrend.

Under that scenario, selling pressure would begin to exhaust itself, new lows would progressively decline, and participation above moving averages would improve.

The first positive divergences could emerge before indices or the most representative companies confirmed a recovery.

Relative strength would help identify companies beginning to stand out during that transition.

Prolonged deterioration scenario

The unfavorable interpretation would be that the correction continues and ultimately erodes an even larger share of accumulated gains.

In that case, initial rebounds would be insufficient to restore trends, and breadth indicators would remain depressed.

Persistent new 52-week lows would be an especially concerning signal.

Current data do not allow either scenario to be ruled out.

Nevertheless, they establish a fundamental condition: a sustainable recovery should be accompanied by a progressive and sufficiently broad improvement in market participation.

10. Indicators to monitor from here

Developments over the coming weeks will be decisive in interpreting the nature of the correction.

The main indicators are:

Participation above the 50-session moving average. Its recovery would identify improving intermediate trends. The current starting point, below 8%, reflects extreme weakness.

Participation above the 200-session moving average. A sustained recovery from levels close to 18% would signal a rebuilding of the long-term trend.

20-session new lows. A persistent decline would indicate that selling pressure is losing breadth.

52-week new lows. Their contraction would be especially relevant in determining whether companies are ceasing to deteriorate their long-term structures.

Relative strength. Identifying companies that stop making new lows, reclaim moving averages and outperform the broader universe would help detect emerging leadership.

None of these indicators should be interpreted in isolation.

Combining several of them provides a more reliable assessment of market conditions.

11. Conclusions

The historical analysis of 452 junior miners between February 2024 and October 2026 yields five fundamental conclusions.

First. The cycle has generated extraordinary gains. Some 73.9% of companies retain positive cumulative returns, and the median exceeds 127%.

Second. The correction has been devastating. The median current drawdown reaches 51.31%, and more than half the universe has lost at least half its value from individual highs.

Third. Technical deterioration is extraordinarily widespread. Participation above the 200-session moving average fell to 17.56% on October 23, while participation above the 50-session moving average dropped to 6.83%.

Fourth. Bearish pressure also affects long-term trends. The high percentage of companies making new 52-week lows indicates that the correction has caused structural damage across a significant part of the universe.

Fifth. There is still no confirmed bullish divergence. The improvement observed on October 26 is an initial favorable sign, but it requires continuity before it can be interpreted as the beginning of a sustainable recovery.

Final reflection

The current situation among junior miners is particularly interesting because it combines two seemingly contradictory realities.

Since February 2024, a large majority of companies have generated very substantial gains.

Yet the recent correction has damaged their technical structures to extreme levels.

This combination can create conditions for significant recoveries, but it can also precede prolonged periods of volatility and weakness.

Extreme oversold conditions describe the magnitude of a decline. They do not, by themselves, prove that the decline has ended.

The truly important signal will not merely be that prices stop falling, but that breadth begins to improve persistently.

Until that happens, analytical caution remains necessary.

The bull market accumulated since February 2024 remains visible in historical returns. The outstanding question is when, and under what conditions, junior miners will begin to rebuild their trends.
